WE ARE ALL HUMAN – LET´S ACT LIKE IT
Feminism is important. There really is no question about it. Emancipation equally so.
For centuries women (and other parts of society) have been oppressed and deprived of some of the most basic human rights. In many countries this is still going on and even here in the ever so civilized western world women aren´t paid the same for the same work, are less likely to get leading positions and are sexually harassed.
So yes, feminism is important, very much. But some subgroups of feminism have done it a more than questionable favour by demonizing men in general. Men, they say, are all the same, they are unemphatic, power hungry, have no respect whatsoever for women and are sexual predators.
I think most of us know now that this is as much bull… sheets like saying every woman is softhearted, empathic and slightly dumb.
We are all just human, nobody is exactely the same and we all have our little ways, male or female.
WE´VE COME A LONG WAY
The emancipation of women, though of course not at the finish yet, has come a long way.
And all of us, men and women alike, had to get accustomed to a new world and, more importantly, a new image of gender and how it really affects the way we behave.
So let´s go one step further: Maybe gender really isn´t so much about the physical traits we are born with. Maybe it´s more like a spectrum of so called „male“ and „female“ characteristics we all have.
The medial attention the topic „transgender“ had in the last couple of weeks is, in my eyes, a very good thing. It may have the potential to give us the push we need to reconsider the nature of gender in general.
And it´s not just about people who have been born with physical traits that don´t fit the way they feel about themselves. Me, I never really identified as „purely“ female, but I didn´t feel „male“, either. I´m somewhere in between, and many others are too.
Should that not be a motivation to do away with gender stereotypes and start concentrating on what really is important, for all of us, male, female and others alike:
To fight for the right to be accepted for who we are, regardless of gender, skin colour, disabilities, style of dress, income…
IT´S NOT A WAR, IT´S A REVOLUTION
Of course this won´t happen overnight and there are still many battles to fight.
Many men still think that women have no leading skills. Many Women still think that men are foremost sexual predators.
But I think we should do this together, male, female, hermaphrodite, transgender, hetero-, homo- and bisexual.
I think it should be okay for a woman to want to stay at home with the kids and for a man to want to be „manly“ and have a career.
I think it should be okay for a man to want to show his female side and wear skirts (men in skirts can be very sexy, by the way 😉 ) and make-up and for a women to not care so much about that.
And if we don´t start working together instead of fighting each other we will never be able to achieve this.
